GIG 10 Raptor bass prototype with quilted maple body & Matsumoku neck

guitarz.blogspot.com:
Here at Guitarz we like to applaud small guitar companies everywhere who of course have to compete against the usual suspects in the guise of Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, etc and also against cheap Chinese imports. Having said that, I can't in all honesty say that I like the design of this prototype Gig 10 Raptor bass. Unfortunately, the design looks all too random in a "weird for the sake of it" way, and I say that despite being a fan of "holey" guitars. But never mind me, I'm sure there's a whole bunch of people that it'll appeal to, after all it does look like a bass that's been born to rock. If B.C. Rich had come up with this design, it could have been a classic already. This prototype from GIG 10 Guitar Productions of the Pacific Northwest, USA, features a refurbished Matsumoku-made neck circa 1985 married to a one-piece solid maple body with a highly figured quilted grain.

Currently listed on eBay with a starting price of $499.

  2. Looks like it was designed by a graffiti artist.
Interesting enough but not for me.

  3. Gavin,

This may surprise some but being caught between old-line, asleep at the wheel icons and cheesy, mass produced Chinese imports MIGHT just wind up being the catbird seat! Allow me to explain:

The U.S went thru this with beer mfrs. Initially they couldn't have cared LESS about all those insolent, start-up "craft brewers". The ding to market share didn't even amount to a rounding error! But what they FOUND was, drinkers below a certain age developed a taste for them and ever year's graduating class ( that reached that magic Legal Age ) continued to turn their back on "macro brews". Houston..? We have a problem!

Over a span of 20 years, the big producers were forced to re-brand themselves as craft brewers, even offering all kinds of promotions and give-aways for the bar crowd UNDER 30! Since then we've seen an AWFUL and forced consolidation of that industry. And SILL they are losing market share!? The appeal and desperation becomes more frantic w/ each new ad campaign. I see similar dynamics at play in the guitar arena. And the $'s flocking to the collectible forum aren't helping them either!

    1. Sure, a PhotoShop marquee has been used around the outside of the bass to create a white-out effect, but that doesn't mean the bass itself is not real. If you look at the eBay listing itself there are plenty of other photograps to reinforce that it is indeed real.

  7. I mean, I know where it was made and by whom, but how did it get from Toledo Washington to the Ventura California swapmeet?

    1. I built it here at GIG 10 in Ioledo, Washington and sold it on ebay to someone in Califorrnia. They were pleased with the bass so I am surprised you found it at a swapmeet. I have received nothing but positive reviews from other GIG 10 Guitar owners and hope that this bass gets its chance to show what it was made for.

  8. I'm gonna play it at some shows. It's been modified a bit. Just the controls. Nothing that can't be put back the way it was. I's a keeper.
