Shonky Mako Prototype Guitar

It can happen with these kind of experimental designs, I can't tell if this Shonky prototype is ugly or brilliant… Some part are quite ergonomic, some aren't, some details are even awkward, but all in all it's a nice try - hundred times better than the average clone… What do you think?

  1. It's certainly a bold effort to be different.
    My first impression is that the thin body finish does not really suit this design.
    Also I think a more substantial rollover (radius) on the body outline would help a lot.

    1. I agree with you to the fact that the top of the body could be more rounded but maybe it would loose its "Chonky" feel. I quite like the finish; black and red always make me think of Spain (birthland of guitar) and holidays;

  2. I believe that Shonky Guitars are built by one of our regular readers... although I'm afraid to say that I forget who.

    Anyway, I quite like it (and I'm not just saying that).

  4. Hi It is one of mine. Thanks for featuring it.
    Bertram what parts do you feel are not ergonomic and akward?
    Tony The first one I made as a completed guitar had rounder edges but I felt the definition was lost a little by softening it. The "production" models (if you can call anything I do production) will be a bit narrower and will have a slight bevel on the top edge. They will also have a much nicer headstock which compliments the body shape. I hope Guitarz will feature it when it's finished.

    1. We'll be happy to feature the refined (or is that more evolved) version of this model guitar when it is ready! Just let us know and send us some pics... gavinllloydwilson@yahoo.com

    2. hi Antony, I didn't think I'd have to stand for what I wrote about your guitar, but I guess that for me like for you going out on the internet exposes us to this kind of things! :-) So in my opinion your design lacks an armrest, and the cutaway doesn't seem practical - and the pickguard following the outline of the guitar doesn't feel right… but you know what, my first prototype will be finished in a few weeks and I'll show it here, and, hum, you'll tell me what you think of it!

    3. Are you trying to re-invent Ovation electric guitars? Don't go too far in that way or you'll loose your soul! Remain "Chonky"!

    4. Bertram I have no problem whatsoever with criticism as long as it's intelligently presented. The reason for the lack of armrest is when I play particularly I feel my right elbow is unnaturally forced forward twisting my shoulder which then gives me shoulder ache. There is still an amount of body for the forearm to rest on and you elbow and shoulder is at a more natural angle. initially it was a design to allieviate this problem for myself but I'm sure I'm not the only one who suffers this. I'm not sure which cutaway you mean. All I can say is the guitar balances really well for me and I'm an average build. I guess the proof is in the playing. Either way I have tried to make it look different I probably agree with you about the pick guard It inbalances it a little but then I have the freedom to make the next one completely different again. I wish I had the funds to send out demo models but unfortunately I haven't. I pretty much have to sell as I build. p.s I am watching your guitar build with interest :-)
      Arzeur I actually think the breadwinner is pretty ugly although maybe practical and ergonomic I have to admit I have never played one. .
