I think just about everyone viewing this blog will know immediately what kind of bass it is that this 1970s Hoyer is copying in its design. Somehow it seems almost righteous that an instrument designed by the company founded by Adolf Rickenbacker should end up being copied in Germany. And although it isn't the most accurate copy, it does seem to be beautifully made; witness the checkered binding, the glued in neck, and note the stereo outputs on the pickguard. The seller insists that this is "one of the most hard to find basses made by Hoyer and extremely rare" and goes on to sing its praises as regards playability and performance.
Currently listed on eBay with a Buy It Now price of €1,249 (item currently located in Berlin).

Did Hoyer continue to make guitars into the 80's? It's just that this rather strikingly emulates a Rickenbacker played by Cliff Burton in said 80's, so is the 70's tag perhaps a little erroneous?
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm not a Metallica fan, I do respect his skill, and his 4001 was, basically, Burgundy, with a jazz bass pick-up in the bridge, and a Gibson mudbucker in the neck. Ring any bells? while the Japanese were noted for copying artist models (well of course) the Germans perhaps stuck to more straightforward 'Inspired by' guitars, but perhaps this was either a friendly emulation of an artist bass, or Hoyer have such prescience as to be able to build future guitars BEFORE THEY ARE EVEN BUILT.
I've said it before, I'll say it again, German industry terrifies me with it's brilliance.
No doubt this is a good (not great )guitar but the price is much to high for a copy. Just buy the real one it's just a few bucks more expensive. And look at the neck; it's been "injured" . If you want to fix that it will cost you about 300€ so I just can say too expensive for a copy( even a good one)
ReplyDeleteReally all guitars are well designed. I think to learn guitar as an art form as well as a form of entertainment.

ReplyDeleteI did own the guitar version of that. Beautifully made, I bought it in the mid 80ies after its been around in the store for a decade. The interesting thing on the guitar was that it married the Ric shape with a more Les Paulish construction, in terms of wood, neck to body tilt, headstock to neck tilt. When I got it it was still originally strung up with flatwould strings and sounded actuallly horribe. Changing to flatwoulds made it sound a bit less horrible. I had it for a couple of years, simply it was constructed so beatifully before it went missing during a move...
