Custom Rick Toone Headless, fan-fretted T2 Telecaster

guitarz.blogspot.com:

I'm not going to get into too much detail. The pictures speak for themselves on this one. Either you love when some one takes a tried and true design and turns it into a unique beast, or you hate it. There is rarely someone in the middle on these issues.

This Rick Toone T2  is designed to be polarizing. The craftsmanship may speak for itself. It looks extremely well made and has all the elements of a great guitar.

What I'm mostly offended by is the price, $17500 US.

Admittedly I know very little about the Luthier Rick Toone apart from the fact that I've heard his name before, and have seen one or two of his more ergonomic offerings.

Has anyone here own/played one of his guitars? Is it worth the hefty price tag?

Egan 7 string fanned fret acoustic guitar

guitarz.blogspot.com:

I feel this will be a very polarizing post. You will either love this Egan 7-String acoustic or you will hate it. I really want to love it, and even though it's an incredible work by a very talented luthier I find myself on the side of hate.

It's just too much. There is a lot going on here with multiple wood choices, pinstriping, binding, and I've never been a fan of back and side woods not matching.

Check out the video at the link to hear the builder play this odd duck. It honestly sounds quite nice. Yet, it's clearly not for me.

Am I alone here?

Hehnke one-off ergonomic guitar with multi-scale fan-fretted neck

guitarz.blogspot.com:
Here's a guitar hand-built by Guitarz reader Dan Hehnke, who tells us:
I'm a luthier in Colorado, US (engineer by trade), but I love making unusual and comfortable guitars out of beautiful and whenever possible sustainably sourced woods.

This guitar has a chambered Alder body with a Koa top. The neck is cherry/maple/cherry laminated with a scarf jointed curly maple headstock, and with cherry binding. I love cherry for necks, and I don't know why more people don't use it! Yes, the body is my latest ergonomic shape that is really comfortable for the forearm, plus the cutaways allow it to be played normal horizontal style while sitting, or by putting the large cutout on the left leg is comfortable classical style. I made custom koa pickup rings and knobs for it. I also had a custom slanted TOM style bridge made for it, as I couldn't find anything that worked for me off the shelf. I designed it in Solidworks and had a machine shop make it out of 6061 aluminum. The current pickups are Duncan P-rails, though I have a set of custom made cream humbuckers for it on the way.
Thanks Dan for sharing your creation with us! We'd like to see more reader-built guitars on this blog, so please contact us or post a photo and accompanying text on the Guitarz FaceBook page.

Prometeus Mothra multi-scale/fan-fretted 5-string bass with moose antlers!

guitarz.blogspot.com:
I don't know if the horns on this handmade Prometeus multi-scale 5-string bass are deliberately supposed to resemble moose antlers, but that's my interpretation. I think it would suit a band from Scandinavia, or Canada or Alaska. Perhaps.

In actual fact, Prometeus is from Italy and this particular model is named "Mothra" which may mean Japanese Godzilla movies were the inspiration.

Confused? OK, never mind all the above speculation, let's look at the specs: 34"-32.5" scale over 5-strings, 24 frets, quarter-sawn Wengé neck with deep set-in construction without neck heel, quarter-sawn Bubinga fingerboard, French Chestnut body, 1 ceramic humbucker (shielded and wax-potted) with vol/tone controls, black hardware, dual action truss rod, Shellac-based finish, total weight of 3.7kg).

And if you'd like to know how it sounds:

Currently being offered for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $1,399.

Novax Charlie Hunter 8-string guitar

It's been a while since we last fed our too-many-strings category - and today no many-necked harp, no video game title song tapped on a 16-string bass, no Meshuggah-like juggernaut riff performed on an 8-string hyperstrat, but a very classy 8-string Novax Charlie Hunter Solidbody 8 guitar with a strange but ergonomic Les Paul extrapolation body in beautiful natural finish and a fanned fret neck.

It combines 5 guitar strings and 3 bass strings with separate electronics including 2 jack outputs and Bartolini pickups specially conceived fort it. Jazz musician Charlie Hunter contributed to its conception and used it extensively as you can see on the video below (there is also a semi-hollow version of this guitar).

So it there still someone who thinks that a 8-string guitar is a gadget?

Prat 12-string bass

guitarz.blogspot.com:
We've heard of 12-string basses before, but ordinarily (if such an instrument could ever be said to be ordinairy) they consist of four courses of tripled strings. This Prat 12-string bass is an ERB - Extended Range Bass - and has 12 individual courses.
Yes, such instruments can sound very nice, although I'm yet to be convinced as I've never heard a truly incredible (or even particularly memorable) piece of music made with one. Touchstyle instruments have been around for a long time (I can't imagine this Prat 12-er can be played any other way than touchstyle), but they've not really set the music world alight innovation-wise have they? They just remain an intrtiguing curio; the audience is more interested in the number of strings and unusual playing technique than the actual music produced. (Oh - prove me wrong, someone!)
This post originates at http://guitarz.blogspot.com - beware of those damned scraper blogs!
I've said it before and will very likely say it again: if you want that many strings, get a harp already!

Crimson 8-string fanned-fret guitar

guitarz.blogspot.com:
I've been meaning to write about Crimson Guitars for ever. The guitars are painstakingly handcrafted by Ben Crowe and his trusty assistant Igor, and if you've ever had any interest in the construction procress then I recommend you follow the Crimson Guitars workshop diary on the website or alternatively on Facebook as Ben seemingly documents every step of the build for each guitar. They also produce their own hardware including tremolos, headless tuning systems, control knobs, bridges, etc, whilst pickups are often by Wizard, but of course they can be whatever the customer requires.

Past instruments have included those made from exquisite tonewoods with highly controured ergonomic bodies, touch style instruments, carved perspex guitars and basses, and clients include (appropriately enough) King Crimson's Robert Fripp and Charlie Jones, bassist with Robert Plant, Goldfrapp and Siouxsie Sioux.

This particular instrument is a fanned-fret multi-scale 8-string guitar which is suitable for touch-style playing. Crimson guitars are bespoke instruments built specifically to a customer's requirements, but they do produce the occasional stock instrument. I'm sure Ben won't mind me saying that this guitar, now being offered on eBay, only became available as a stock instrument because the customer changed his mind and decided he didn't like the slanted pickups. Unperterbed, Ben began the whole process again and built a second 8-string fan-fretted instrument for the customer. I have to say, the original that we see here with the slanted pickups looks much much better, but if the customer wants straight-aligned pickups that's what he gets!

If I ever come into money, my dream is to commision a Crimson guitar. I think they are so fantastic, I included two in the "500 Guitars" book.

Wishnevsky Holy Lobe Bass

guitarz.blogspot.com:
Here's another delightfully eccentric hand-made bass from Steve Wishnevsky, a.k.a. Wish Bass. This unique, one-off fan-fretted bass is called the Holy Lobe Bass and is currently up for grabs on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $500. The through neck is made from laminates of mahogany, purpleheart and maple, and the body is of wild cherry. As on other Wishbasses, there is no trussrod. It also features a Kent Armstrong humbucker, and the controls are basic being just limited to just a single volume.

Peter Kellett Fanned Fret Aluminium Strat

Fanned Fret Aluminium Strat
Any Strat fans searching eBay for the weird and wonderful may well have missed this Peter Kellett Strat type guitar because the seller has, for reasons unknown, very ingeniously listed it as a Tele type guitar. It's a guitar that ticks off several of our "weird" boxes. Firstly you'll notice it has an over-the-top "Western" graphic applied to the front of the body. The body itself is anodized aluminium and the listing claims it is "From the last of the Harly Davidson bodies" (sic) which would imply that the body is genuine Fender. The most unusual feature, however, is the neck which features the Novax (or "Kovax" as the seller insists on calling it) patented fanned fret system so that the scale length varies for each of the strings, the top E having the shortest scale and the low E having the longest and which supposedly makes for more comfortable left-hand positioning.

For more guitars in a similar vein, see kellettguitars.com.
