Briilliant made in Japan St George MP3 from the 1960s

Here we have yet another example of Japanese awesomeness from the past. This 1960s St George MP3 hits a lot of perfect notes for me. The body shape is familiar but unique, there is a healthy dose of chrome but not so much as to take away from the overall elegance, and a wacky headstock that really isn't so wacky after all. It just looks like the right headstock for this guitar. The Burns-esque pickups and faux shell pick guard are just icing.

I wish I'd had one of these 30 years ago so I could be all hipster-like and say that I had an MP3 way before you could put them on your ipod.

1960s MIJ St George in greenburst finish and fantastic condition up for grabs on eBay UK

The St George brand was created for the St George music stores which had branches in Hollywood and New York in the 1960s, although the guitars themselves came from a number of sources. Some were imported from Japan having been manufactured by the Shiro Musical Instrument Manufacturing company, whilst other St George badged guitars were built by Paul Barth (known also for his Bartell guitars) in Riverside, California.

The St George guitar in greenburst finish pictured here is one of the former Made In Japan guitars and is currently being offered for sale on eBay UK with a starting price of £600. The condition appears to be excellent; it's as if the guitar has been in storage for the last 40+ years. Note the four Burns-like pickups and the Jaguar/Jazzmaster style vibrato beyond the bridge. I'd imagine this guitar would be something of a surf monster!

St George-branded vintage Japanese guitar - pristine condition

This St George guitar, model EJ-2-T, is almost certainly a re-branded Teisco. It has a number of Teisco-like features inlcuding the highly-sought after and now legendary gold foil pickups, the attributes of which were brought to the world's attention by guitarist Ry Cooder.

For a guitar that is going on for 50 years old it appears to be in amazing condition - it's practically as new, and all the parts are there.

The St George brand was created for the St George music stores which had branches in Hollywood and New York in the 1960s, and this guitar would have been original stock that had been kept by the St George family all these years.
