5 Weird Guitars from Craigslist!

Hi there. My name is Billy and I’m a writer with Guitartricks.com, where we teach people how to play guitar online! I’m a huge fan of looking for weird, interesting guitars, and one of the best places to do it is on Craigslist.

Craigslist is home to a number of interesting guitars. Here are some that I came across that are entirely unique and unlike anything I’ve ever seen in person. Some of these guitars are custom-built, others aren’t guitars at all but instead, use leftover guitar bodies and parts. Check them out!

Steampunk Telecaster- $350

This telecaster was “Made like a Tele.” According to the sales post. I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to play this, or even hold it. The parts seem pretty sharp but if you really want if you’re playing in a steampunk rock band, then maybe this is a match made in heaven. 

The Roasting PanResonator - $250

Apparently, the seller has listed this as a “3-string, acoustic/electric, roasting-pan resonator guitar.” If you want to know what this instrument really sounds like, the seller even posted a video of him playing it! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/BNLiMz7Lucs

Budweiser CollectibleGuitars - $6100 (for all 4)

Who knew Budweiser made guitars? Looks like this seller has a handful of Gibson and PRS guitars with custom Budweiser paint on them. One of these is a “very rare” Les Paul Custom shop! I’m more of a Guinness kind of guy myself though.

Homemade ElectricGuitar - $110

This guitar caught my eye simply because it looks very sharp! Just look at that thing. You can slice a cake with this guy. Otherwise, it looks like a pretty clean custom-built number with mahogany and maple. 

Custom Hand MadeBluetooth Speaker Guitar - $220

This seller has taken broken guitars and turned them into speakers. There are three different guitar/speakers for sale. I wonder if these sound any good!

Scorpion Bass Guitar- $245

This is the only bass on this list but it looked so darn interesting, I couldn’t help but put it on the list. It’s a custom made guitar and looks like it started life originally as a Maestro.

Very strange Precision and Jazz Bass headless conversions listed on eBay

Here are an odd pair of basses I saw listed in separate auctions from the same seller on eBay. As you can clearly see they are strangely tweaked Fender designs, namely a Jazz Bass and a P-Bass, both bizarrely converted to headless instruments. Well I say headless, but each has a mini-headstock which acts as a string anchor. The mini-headstock in itself is not inelegant; however at the other end of each instrument is a strange protuberance (a butt-stock, perhaps?) carrying the tuners. Surely there could have been a neater way of doing this, e.g using a Steinberger-style bridge with integral tuners. Also note that it would be impossible to stand up either of these basses while not being used without the right kind of guitar stand. As for getting a case to fit...

I'm guessing that these are one-off custom jobs. Judging by the photographs the conversion and finish on each has been carried out very competently. My only questions are Why? and Who will these appeal to?

Odd Reverse Jazzmaster with a giant "why?"

As a fan of Jazzmasters this reverse parts-made beast caught my eye. Would we call it a Reverse Partsmaster? Generally I'm pretty ambivalent when it comes to reverse bodies on guitars. Sometimes it works while other times, not so much.

This falls in the "not so much" category. The inclusion of the Samick neck and the crudeness of some of the woodworking doesn't help the case for this poor guitar.

And, most glaringly, the output jack. How......what.....why? 

The seller is aware of the complete stupidity of this jack location and has decided to sell it as it is. 

So, there's that at least

This Seven String 36 fret Yellow Gary Kramer R36 is a beast in yellow.

Though this Gary Kramer R36 seven string guitar goes against a lot of what I believe in, I really kind of like it.

To me it looks like something that would have been made by Teuffel in his teen years, before he settled into a more mature style.

This particular one has had some modifications including the removal of frets 28, 30, 32, and 34 to make access easier for human-sized hands. This yellow beast was clearly designed for an alien so in it's intended hands it there would be no need for such a modification.

Erik's "Third Bridge" Bass VI / Baritone Guitar

Whoah! Who would do something like this to an unsuspecting Jazzmaster body?

Erik explains:

About a year ago you showed my 'plank guitar' on your blog. I have been building some more strange guitars and here are some pictures of the last project. It is a so-called third bridge guitar with baritone neck and Bass VI strings. Those were the only strings I could find with sufficient length. With a circular saw I cut the body in two pieces, add some wood and glued it all together. The extra wood was necessary to get enough length. There's a slight nod in the body to get enough tension on the strings. In the end I have to say: it plays and sound a lot better than I had previously thought!

Gibson USA "BECK: Lucille" Modified (allegedly): see if you can make sense of the item description!

This Gibson Les Paul Classic with faux bullet holes in its top is currently listed on eBay with a Buy It Now price of US $2,427 and with free shipping from Japan where the guitar is currently located. I tried finding out some more information about this "customised" guitar, however, the description in the eBay listing left me even more confused:

Strat copy given the hollow / relic treatment on eBay in Germany

Currently listed on eBay with an optimistic Buy It Now price of €685.

When it comes to "Holey" Strats, I much prefer my own Feline Holy Panther. (Which, incidentally has now been immortalised on vinyl record and CD on the track "(Return Of The) Maggot Brain" on the new Sendelica "Live At Crabstock" album).

But if you prefer your Strats even more minimalistic, then there are these!

Vintage 1960s True Tone round-bodied guitar (very unlikely UN-original)

Despite having an original 1960s Truetone neck, this electric banjo-like round-bodied guitar is almost certainly a Frankenstein job pieced together from parts rather than a forgotten vintage gem. The modern Tele-style bridge with 6 individual saddles is a dead giveaway, and those plates on the front and back of the body look suspiciously as if they're hiding something - most like the joining together of the centre section of an old Truetone guitar with the new(-er) body wings. We can see from the photos that the neck section was originally from a glued-in neck guitar, and the joins are all too obvious. Nevertheless it's an interesting curiosity of a guitar in its own right and with a starting bid of US $19.99 it'll be interesting to see what a true pawn shop guitar like this might sell for.

Luthiery meets taxidermy: the ever-so creepy Zulu War Lord "dead deer and steer" electric guitar

Mark Rubel saw this rather creepy looking guitar listed on Craigslist in Nashville, where the seller describes it thus:

Classic "Strat Style" Warmoth Body with Compound Radius Neck ~ 1980's Dimarzio pick-ups ~ Just enuf fur, deerskin, and eyeballs for those primal screamistic tones ~ All kidding aside, this guitar sounds and plays really well ~ I purchased it in 1988 in it's "raw" form and decided it needed some "showbiz flair"... call me crazy but I definitely had fun adding the real deerskin and eyeballs from my local taxidermist and the signature steerhorns, which by the way can be removed to fit in any standard soft or hard case. Kahler wammy bar and locking nut system ~ Headstock is left blank so you can "brand in" your name of choice.

$425 offers considered, or possible trades for vintage pygmy blow dart gun ~

Just for once I think I'd prefer the dreaded dice or skull control knobs!

Dean Z-X Fake leopard fur fabric-covered Explorer

Some crazy crazy dude - very possibly inspired by ZZ Top - has covered this Dean Z-X Explorer type guitar in fake leopard fur fabric. Need I comment any more? Other than to say that I hope whoever plays this guitar doesn't get too hot and sweaty on stage as it could end up being really stinky, and it's not like you can just bung it in the washing machine.

Trevor Gordon Hall plays the Kalimbatar

Now this is really cool. This is Trevor Gordon Hall and he's playing this piece on his kalimbatar - which in essence is an acoustic guitar with a kalimba (thumb piano) surface mounted to it. The tone of the kalimba perfectly matches his guitar, but then it is sharing the guitar's soundbox. Check him out on Candyrat Records.

Bizarro so-called resonator guitar being offered for sale on eBay

The eBay listing for this Highway Key supposed "resonator guitar" starts as follows:

You are bidding [No, I'm not, I'm just looking] on a one of a kind, custom made acoustic/electric resonator from Highway Key Guitars. This model is # 29 in a limited series. Vintage blonde Sprucetop classical body. Comfortable red stained neck and back.Unique steel "cakepan" floating resonator pan houses hotrodded single coil pickup wired to vol/tone & 1/4in jack covertly placed on back. Blacked out reso pan and knobs compliment the custom headstock. This is a Blonde Bombshell!

Excuse me, but a true resonator guitar features a spun steel cone which has the BRIDGE of the guitar floating at its centre point. I can't believe that the same sound can be achieved by someone cutting a large hole in the top of a cheap acoustic guitar and shoving a cake tin into it. If this thing pictured here has any kind of mojo or idiosyncratic sound (most likely some subjectively "interesting" rattling noises), it must be purely accidental.

A gumby-shaped DIY furry guitar currently listed on eBay UK

I'm trying to work out quite what the original body shape is beneath all that fur fabric on this self-made fluffy guitar currently listed on eBay UK. Despite the Telecaster hardware, the shape now appears to be "gumby"-like.

I'm not really sure who it's supposed to appeal to. Perhaps a glam-rock covers party band? Or a Wombles or Banana Splits tribute band maybe?

Python-shaped guitar for snake lovers

Whilst this python guitar isn't something that appeals to me personally, even I have to admit that the creators, Xentric guitars, have done a first class finishing job on it. As to how it actually plays, I couldn't comment. And at least the snake theme isn't such an appalling cliché in hobnailed boots as a guitar with skulls all over it.

As you can see it's very smooth and shiny... possibly a little too glossy?

It's a pity about the generic Strat-type neck. It would have been nice if the headstock design could have continued the snake motif in some way. Also, as such a lot of work has obviously been put into this guitar, it amazes me that the string ends haven't been clipped up at the tuners. They've gone to the bother of fitting coloured strings, so I'd have thought that presentation was an issue.
