Here's a one-off guitar originally built for Jeff Beck in 1992 by UK luthier Steve Acworth. Jeff Beck famously has a passion for hot rod cars, so it should come as no surprise that the guitar reflects this in its design. You can find more information on Steve's website, and also info on his other guitar builds, many of which are quite intriguing (e.g. Formica-topped acoustic guitars which apparently don't like having a bridge glued on for long, sitar guitars, and an amazing looking instrument called The Multiharp).
Quite why Jeff Beck doesn't still own the Ford '34 Coupé guitar is not explained, but the man himself has signed the guitar, and it is currently being offered for sale on eBay with a whopping Buy It Now price of £21,500.

Could anyone imagine Jeff Beck playing a guitar without volume and tone pots. For this kind of price they could at least have put 6 strings on it and a tremolo arm (if there is a tremolo!)
ReplyDeleteThe volume pot is in the centre of the rear wheel of the car, although it appears to be missing a knob. The guitar is equipped with a tremolo, but maybe the arm is missing... Who knows?
DeleteYeah, I agree, seeing as the seller is asking 21,500 smackers for this guitar, the least they could do would be to string it up, and make sure it had all the parts it ought to.
really enjoyed perusing Steve Acworths site. I was not aware of him before. Some quite splendid guitars and Ideas. I don't think the coupe guitar is one of his finer guitars though!
ReplyDeleteHe lives reasonably local to me (well, about an hour's drive). I met him recently at one of our local guitar clubs. At some point I'm going to take him a couple of guitars that need some attention, e.g. the Tanglewood Baby with intonation problems.
DeleteBought a Steve Acworth no18 guitar today (as well as 5 other more vintage models) from the elderly brother of the former (now deceased) owner. Am normally an antique porcelain dealer. But saw these and thought I'd go for them. Bought:

ReplyDeleteI don't think this guitar should be sold as Jeffs as it had belonged to my partner for the last 22 years, he knows Jeff and that is why it had been signed by him ! Lee swapped an amplifier for it ! Total cost approximately 250 pounds

DeleteYes I realise that and I have contacted the seller I just didn't want someone to buy the guitar thinking it belonged to Jeff and its a lot of money to hand over for a signed guitar that wasn't even his. I just didn't want anyone being ripped off. However it is a nice piece.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very rare occasion when I ever make anything "normally". In retirement, I don't take commissions any more but continue to experiment. Here's the latest private building project (I'd rather be painting).
