5 Weird Guitars from Craigslist!

Hi there. My name is Billy and I’m a writer with Guitartricks.com, where we teach people how to play guitar online! I’m a huge fan of looking for weird, interesting guitars, and one of the best places to do it is on Craigslist.

Craigslist is home to a number of interesting guitars. Here are some that I came across that are entirely unique and unlike anything I’ve ever seen in person. Some of these guitars are custom-built, others aren’t guitars at all but instead, use leftover guitar bodies and parts. Check them out!

Steampunk Telecaster- $350

This telecaster was “Made like a Tele.” According to the sales post. I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to play this, or even hold it. The parts seem pretty sharp but if you really want if you’re playing in a steampunk rock band, then maybe this is a match made in heaven. 

The Roasting PanResonator - $250

Apparently, the seller has listed this as a “3-string, acoustic/electric, roasting-pan resonator guitar.” If you want to know what this instrument really sounds like, the seller even posted a video of him playing it! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/BNLiMz7Lucs

Budweiser CollectibleGuitars - $6100 (for all 4)

Who knew Budweiser made guitars? Looks like this seller has a handful of Gibson and PRS guitars with custom Budweiser paint on them. One of these is a “very rare” Les Paul Custom shop! I’m more of a Guinness kind of guy myself though.

Homemade ElectricGuitar - $110

This guitar caught my eye simply because it looks very sharp! Just look at that thing. You can slice a cake with this guy. Otherwise, it looks like a pretty clean custom-built number with mahogany and maple. 

Custom Hand MadeBluetooth Speaker Guitar - $220

This seller has taken broken guitars and turned them into speakers. There are three different guitar/speakers for sale. I wonder if these sound any good!

Scorpion Bass Guitar- $245

This is the only bass on this list but it looked so darn interesting, I couldn’t help but put it on the list. It’s a custom made guitar and looks like it started life originally as a Maestro.

Fender So-Cal custom design Stratocaster from 2005

This is the first time I'd seen this Korean made So-Cal Fender Stratocaster.

It's not really something I'm into, but it is a unique piece worthy of mention here on Guitarz. I've not had the time yet to look it up, I wonder if they only did a Strat this way. Perhaps there's an offset or a Tele that could change my mind on the design.

Status custom one-off doubleneck 5-string bass and 6-string guitar

This particular guitar/bass satisfies both my current obsessions at the moment, namely (1) doublenecked guitar bass combos, and (2) headless guitars and basses. I was pretty sure I'd never seen a doubleneck from Status before, but reading the seller's description on this eBay auction it seems that this beast has been created by customising a Status Series 2000 bass with a graphite through neck and basically adding the whole guitar section. The work was carried out by AC Guitars, who also hand-carved the bolt-on guitar neck from maple and ebony.

The seller had this made for a Genesis tribute band (we'd best gloss over that quickly before I start one of my anti-tribute band rants) but which work obligations meant that he wasn't able to participate in. That's a very specialised instrument and a lot of financial outlay for a project that didn't come to fruition.

Yet again I have to get on my usual hobby horse and say that the necks are the wrong way around. OK, call it "opinion" if you will, but I truly believe that it makes much more sense to have the bass neck BELOW the guitar neck. It's simply a better layout, giving improved access to the strings on each neck ...unless you like a bass slung really high up on your chest. (I don't.) The balance of the instrument should also be improved, although maybe that isn't such an issue when the necks are headless.

Also, think about it, if you wanted a doubleneck guitar/mandolin combo, you wouldn't put the smaller mandolin neck beneath the guitar neck, would you? Illogical.

Despite all that, it's a really interesting piece and showcases some excellent custom work from AC Guitars. Currently listed on eBay UK with a starting price of £725.

Very odd and beautiful custom made guitar by H.M. Philips - Blue Moon Guitars

I feel this will be a polarizing post.

I think you will either love or hate this custom made guitar, according to the inside label it's called a Blue Moon, made by H.M Phillips. It is indeed very unique. A quick internet search only yielded the kijiji ad and a few other online seller ads for this particular guitar.

Based on the pictures, this seems to be an extremely well made guitar. It sports a nice spruce top, koa back and sides, and a mahogany neck. The offset soundhole and odd body shape take a bit to get used to but I really like it. It should also be noted that it has 26 frets. What notes lie beyond the 15th fret are usually a mystery to me, but for the more adventurous player this could be a big plus. It also comes with a custom built form fitting case, very classy.

I'd really like to see what other guitars this luthier has built. I'll have to do more online sleuthing later.

1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom with MSA Pedal Attachment

Never mind your Tele with B-Bender, this 1971 Gibson Les Paul can do all that and more. It does look a bit cumbersome with all those cables coming out of it though. Anyway, here's the story from the eBay seller:

The Les Paul [Serial #686339] is in real nice shape and before all you vintage freaks, freak out, the MSA mod was done in 1979 before this instrument was considered vintage and/or important. So take a deep breath and read about this very unique piece of guitar history.

The guitar belongs to a prominent Los Angeles studio session player from Dallas, Texas. He is retiring and selling many of the instruments that he no longer has a call for. Being in Texas put him in the circle of players that were doing a wide range of commercial music and Steel Guitar was one of the more prominent flavors in the air. Maurice Anderson and Tom Morell (of Dallas) created MSA Steel Guitars and were crazy enough to develop this pedal system for six-string guitar. Phil Baugh was an early adopter and can be heard on George Jones “HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY” and “IF DRINKING DON'T KILL ME, HER MEMORY WILL” playing his modified instrument. Here is a link that features Phil playing his MSA modified Peavey.

This Gibson Les Paul Custom is the only one like it in the world that has this MSA attachment, that Maurice Anderson personally installed in 1979 [may've been 1980]. There were 24 more installed on Peavey guitars, but only the first one of those was sold [for $10,000] to the Austin, Texas friend of Reese who coerced him into developing this MSA unit. The others were never sold, because they were locked up in a warehouse in receivership,as MSA went bankrupt, & the Peavey's were never seen again as far as I know [this might have changed, since MSA re-emerged from bankruptcy about a decade ago]. There was also a Gibson L-5s modified for Phil Baugh.

The only other mods on this Les Paul are coil taps & a phase switch, for more sound variety, since it was never gonna sell as "original" anyway.

The MSA attachment comes off or goes on in ten seconds with thumb screws, & it stays in tune, unlike the permanently attached precursor that Reese made for Phil Baugh, 40 some odd years ago, for his fender Jazzmaster. The six pedals can be adjusted to vary pitch on each string, individually, anywhere from a half step to 6 half steps up or down, depending on which end of the levers on back of the guitar you attach the string to [pretty ingenious].

The winning bidder can specify the type of strings and other parameters for a complete professional (no charge) set-up before the guitar is shipped.

Bo-Diddley inspired plank-like electric guitar

Here's a custom-made electric guitar that, according to the eBay listing, is a Bo Diddley influenced design. Which is all very commendable; it appears to be a very nicely made instrument.

But... I do find the design of rear of the instrument rather perplexing with its externally-mounted tone chamber and electronics cavity plus the reinforcing blocks of timber in the centre of the back. For myself I'd have preferred these to have been integral to the body, but maybe the construction method dictated the design.

It also reminds me of Bertram's plank guitars.

Custom "rifle stock" bass guitar with stainless steel appointments

Here's a gun-inspired guitar that actually doesn't come across as too offensive. It's actually a custom-made bass in mahogany with stainless steel trim. The neck is apparently a Velvet Hammer (whatever that means) with an open headstock with inward mounted tuners reminscent of the Ampeg scroll bass design. Controls are mounted on the upper edge of the body, and the general design reminds me of Eko's "rifle butt" travel guitar, only scaled up in size.

Ivy Thinline Stratocaster with P-90 pickups and Jaguar trem

It seems that I'm still in a pink strat mood today! 

This Ivy thinline stratocaster in light pink finish shows me once again that strats feel much better with a Jaguar trem and P-90s! I never got the 3 single-coils thing... 

I know nothing about Ivy Guitars company but what I found on their website - that is very little: they build custom guitars, are located in Maryland and make very bizarre models... But this one is definitely cool!

Fender Custom Shop Gold over Paisley Heavy Relic Stratocaster

I've always been clear about the fact that I don't like strats and that I loathe so-called relic finishes. Once in a while though, it's good to have one's certainties shaken, and I really enjoy this Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster with its improbable gold over pink paisley relic paint job. 

Maybe it's because it reminds me of my first guitar, a lake placid blue Kawai Aquarius that I once poorly refinished with hand golden paisley, but it's more than that, if I ever had to play a strat or a relic'ed guitar, it would be this one!

Century custom acoustic guitar, allegedly built as a wall hanger

This guitar, currently listed on eBay, was allegedly:

ordered and designed as a wall hanger, for a wealthy man who gave the rep Taylor specs to build his one of a kind dream guitar

Built by Century Guitars, you'd be forgiven for not realising that it was built to Taylor specs what with all the bling on display: witness that octagonal soundhole and the lashings of pearloid material. That has to be the thickest piece of binding I have ever seen on a guitar! Note how the string anchors are spread out behind the bridge saddle - I think they must have been inspired by Babicz Guitars here.

It's too ostentatious for my own tastes, I prefer my acoustics to be good honest workhorses. I'm more interested in how they play rather than how they look, but then again this is a very visual blog and so this guitar is well at home on Guitarz.

RP Custom Guitars Roach-o-caster acrylic-bodied guitar complete with entombed cockroach

I think the photos of this acrylic-bodied "Roach-o-caster" electric guitar from RP Custom Guitars of Los Angeles say it all. We've looked at a number of see-thru acrylic-bodied guitars before, but the big difference with the Roach-o-caster is that it comes with its own entombed insect cast inside the acrylic body. I don't know about you, but I can't say that I'm too comfortable with the morality or ethics of putting dead bodies of living creatures into a musical instrument, even if it is something as frequently reviled as a cockroach (although I am told that they make very nice pets). The question is, was it already dead when it was put in? I certainly hope so. Even then, there's something quite ghoulish about it.

This guitar, currently located in Berlin, is now listed on eBay.de with a But It Now price of €899.

Python-shaped guitar for snake lovers

Whilst this python guitar isn't something that appeals to me personally, even I have to admit that the creators, Xentric guitars, have done a first class finishing job on it. As to how it actually plays, I couldn't comment. And at least the snake theme isn't such an appalling cliché in hobnailed boots as a guitar with skulls all over it.

As you can see it's very smooth and shiny... possibly a little too glossy?

It's a pity about the generic Strat-type neck. It would have been nice if the headstock design could have continued the snake motif in some way. Also, as such a lot of work has obviously been put into this guitar, it amazes me that the string ends haven't been clipped up at the tuners. They've gone to the bother of fitting coloured strings, so I'd have thought that presentation was an issue.
